Discord Can Now Run on Consoles
08 Oct 2021
An update to Xbox has brought about a limited capability to use Discord with the help of the console’s Edge browser. The app has thus partly satisfied the popular request to make it even more ubiquitous. Indeed, Discord has a reputation for its smooth performance on nearly any device, the consoles being a sad exception until lately. Since there are few combined voice chat messengers that could serve as an alternative to Discord, the Xbox update could mean a big change.
The latest version of Xbox received a new edition of the Microsoft Edge browser as part of the upgrade. While Edge was previously accessible to users, the new, Chromium-based one offers significantly greater robustness and reliability. It comes with a set of new features, too. This means Xbox gamers are now able to browse the web for guides and other helpful information that they might need. Since Discord is not limited to the desktop app but also has a browser version, connecting with other players might become much easier.
It turns out that all Discord features work quite smoothly with the Edge open. If you want to take part in a text conversation or become part of a voice chat, don’t hesitate — both options are available with an Xbox. The not-so-good news is that the voice chat will stop running as soon as you decide to go back to the game. That is, you can use it to share your experience occasionally, but it’s hardly a viable candidate to be dubbed Xbox’s primary party chart.
While Xbox users have been asking the console developers for a workaround, it seems more likely that the two brands will partner for an officially Xbox-friendly, background-compatible version of Discord. Do you think it could boost your playing experience? Please share your ideas as to whether Discord should be made available on Xbox in the comments.
