The Rise of Lord of the Rings Games: Five Titles in Two Years

With Embracer Group's acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises, they have revealed that five LotR games are in development and will be released within two years. The report does not mention titles or platforms, but there is speculation around three potential projects. As part of the acquisition, Embracer revealed in its Q3 2022 financial report that it now has at least five LotR games currently in development, with plans to release them during the 2023/24 fiscal year. Though details are scarce, we know at least three possible titles - Gollum, Return to Moria, and The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth.

The first game speculated to be part of this group is Gollum, a sandbox action-adventure title developed by Daedalic Entertainment and set for release on PC and consoles sometime next year. Return to Moria, another sandbox adventure game from Athlon Games, is also taking shape for a 2023 launch on console and PC platforms. Finally there is The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, an EA mobile game that reportedly focuses on characters from JRR Tolkien’s fantasy world as they battle against one another PvP style.

Aside from these three titles, nothing else has been officially announced by Embracer Group yet - though it's worth noting that with five games due out within two years, it seems likely that more details will be unveiled soon enough. It remains to be seen how closely any future releases will adhere to Tolkien's original stories or if they'll take more creative liberties like some recently released LOTR adaptations such as Amazon Prime Video's TV series The Lord Of The Rings: War Of The Rohirrim (2021).
