TikTok has become the first non-Facebook mobile app and the fifth non-game app after WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, to surpass 3 billion downloads globally.

In the first half of 2021, TikTok recorded 383 million first-time installs making it the most downloaded non-game app globally despite the decrease in installs up to about 619 million in the first half of 2020. This was attributed to the app's removal from the market in India. The app has generated an estimated $919.2 million in consumer spending.

In the second quarter of 2021, TikTok recorded its highest quarter-over-quarter growth in consumer spending since the second quarter of 2020, with a 39% rise from $384.7 to $534.6 million from the previous quarter.

TikTok's adoption accelerated in 2021, with first-time downloads climbing 2 percent to 177.5 million in the first quarter of 2021 and rising a further 16 percent to 205.4 million in the second quarter of 2021. This is by far the most growth the app had seen since the first quarter of 2020 when it gathered more than 315 million installs.

The metrics of the TikTok app depict outstanding growth, but there are still rival apps such as YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat, which have similar functions that have a similar appeal to new and existing users.
