YouTube Is Cleaning up the Platform Image

Some time has passed since the first days of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, and since then, YouTube has been actively deleting content that was discussing the conflict. More than 70,000 videos have been removed from the platform, as they have been surpassing the major violent events policy of the company.

No particular details were shared, but so far, about 9,000 channels were permanently banned – especially important is that pro-Kremlin journalist Vladimir Solovyov has lost his platform. His videos broke many rules surrounding the company’s guidelines and calling the invasion a “libertarian mission” was enough.

Neal Mohan, chief product officer of YouTube, has said that the website has a strict policy when it comes to major events, and denying or trivializing such things is unacceptable on the platform.

Moreover, these decisions had positive results as many Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian people have switched to proper and clear media disclosing truthful content. For example, news channels in Ukraine that take time to release content about the invasion have gathered more than 40 million views. Neal stated that the company’s most important goal is to provide accurate sources for people to understand the full extent of the problem.

YouTube takes a major part in getting rid of misinformation on the Internet, being one of the most influential platforms online. Only in Russia, the company has more than 90 million users that should know the truth about the Invasion of Ukraine. Previously, YouTube has suspended the channels of state-ruled networks like Sputnik and RT, cutting off their ability to disclose false information that comes from Kremlin.

Do you think YouTube will take more actions surrounding the conflict? What other measures should be discussed? Please, share your opinion in the comments below.
